What if someone genuinely doesn’t want a gift?

If someone says they don’t want a gift, maybe approach it differently.

This is where things get interesting! Many people out there simply don’t want another physical gift – they are done with clutter and materialism. This is okay. A gift doesn’t have to be something you can put in a box. Think outside the box and do something different.

Give an experience

Go somewhere together. Book dinner. See a show. Go to a match. Take a day trip to the seaside. Go for a walk somewhere you’ve never been. Do something you’ve both talked about doing but never quite got around to. Sometimes the best gift is simply time together.

What about doing a good deed? Perhaps you could offer to help someone with something they’ve been putting off. Do some gardening. Cook dinner. Help with a DIY job. Look after the kids. Take the dog for a long walk. It might sound simple, but a thoughtful act can be far more valuable than another possession.

And here’s another possibility which might sound crazy to some of you out there! If you genuinely don’t need anything, why not ask people to make a contribution to a charity instead? You get to celebrate your birthday or Christmas while potentially making a meaningful difference to someone else. Knowing someone in need has benefited, should make everyone concerned feel good. We are not advocating posting such a deed on social media for self validation, you knowing this was done should be enough.
